Surveillance Camera Commissioner: annual report 2018 to 2019

The Surveillance Camera Commissioner's sixth annual report to the Home Secretary outlines progress over the past 18 months and his future plans.

The Commissioner’s annual report covers the period 1 April 2018 to 31 December 2019. In his report the Commissioner highlights:
 

  • his intervention into the High Court case regarding automatic facial recognition technology and the fact that his role and the role of the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice are key parts of the legal framework

  • his survey of all police forces in England and Wales to understand their surveillance camera ‘footprint’ and how they are complying with legal requirements under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice - it highlights a lack of strategic governance around partnership working with regard to surveillance cameras which the Commissioner has written to forces about

  • building momentum behind the National Surveillance Camera Strategy for England and Wales

  • through the ANPR Independent Advisory Group the establishment of a working group to look at the impact of cloned and defective plates on the police national ANPR service and propose options to strengthen the manufacture, security and supply chain
